Herbs - a new hope for a family business

28.06.2002 21:25 •
Always so far in the section "THE LOCAL BUSINESS" we told about people who have been developing private business for years and for that time have felt both the honey and the sting of the situation to be responsible for the bread of their family and workers alone. However, this meeting is with two women who are taking first steps in a field known to few - the cultivation of cultivated herbs. Sofka Kavunska and Adriana Kavunska are mother and daughter from the village. Kostandovo. They are currently taking part in the herb growing course organized by the Center for Business and Information at the new nursery in Dorkovo. The decision to include is of Sofka, who has been dealing with wild herbs for two years.

We hope for work because unemployment is high. We have to develop a business for life to start," says Sofka Kavunska. Together with them now 32 people from Kostandovo and Dorkovo are being trained - all hoping to start a family business and make a living. We should not let the land be desolate and we should be out of work, adds Ms. Kavunska. Therefore, her family has planted beans and potatoes on the fertile soil, and on stony land they will grow herbs. Now they've given soil samples to tell nursery specialists what kind of herbs it's suitable for. It will be difficult with watering, but "we will hope to God - in agriculture it is so". She gives an example of the deserted land around Kostandovo station, on which wild chamomile thrives, and someone has to take initiative to plant a cultivated chamomile that is of better quality and more expensive. It may also be that municipalities allocate wastelands for people who do not have their own, the mother believes. According to Sofka Kavunska, the best thing about this project is that the Center for Business and Information has secured the purchase of the produced herbs. Thus, people are sure that their labor will not remain on the road. They are even more pleased that this business can be taken up by the whole family. Sofka herself has already set her two daughters on fire, and Adriana adds: "I helped at the beginning, I am familiar with herbs, and now I will learn more about cultivated herbs, how they are planted, how the soil is processed. We're going to a family business!". Both mother and daughter have a firm stance against the indiscriminate picking of wild herbs, which leads to their destruction. Sofka tells how years ago a lot of people took a lot of money for St. John's wort, every second bought out. But in the second year the valuable herb disappeared, and now cantharion picking is prohibited. It is not unimportant that the course participants receive a certificate that they have practical and theoretical knowledge about herbs and are prepared to grow and collect them, not destroy them because of ignorance and quick profits. Sofka and Adriana's hopes are for good yields. They know that the first year is not likely to get as much as they wish, but they look to the harvest of the second and third years. In September they are preparing to participate in the second course in the nursery, which will not be paid (now they take a scholarship of 127 leva), but will receive seed for seedlings. Sofka has more than 18 years of experience at the textile plant in Rakitovo. She says that if she is offered to return to textile production, she will choose the herbs - they are the new hope of her family. Elena Baeva
