From Friday to Sunday, the restaurant, halls and lobbies of Hotel Velina in Velingrad have become the scene of the most massive participation in the State Championship of Sports Bridge in years. 112 pairs took part in the country's open championship (last year's record was 107). There were requests for participation from Macedonia as well, but the rules for holding the state championship did not allow it.
Bridge-championship 05 brought significant success to the city bridge-club, which recorded its most massive participation so far with 10 pairs. Our pair Borislav and Stefan Trichkovi finished the three-day marathon in 12th place in the final standings and thus ranked among the elite in this intellectual sport. This is the best ranking of a Velingrad couple at a state championship so far. Brothers Trichkovi achieved it after 10th place in the qualifiers and convincing presentation in the final.
For the three days of the competition, the finalists played over 130 games. Sofia couple Mihailov - Stefanov is this year's state champion in sports bridge. The second place remained for Stamatov - Tsonchev from Sofia, and the third for Ivanov - Ivanov from Varna. The winners earned cash prizes and cups made by Boris Kostov. Surprisingly, the world champion seores and multiple state champion Hristo Drumev and his partner Mechikyan failed to line up among the 28 strongest couples in the final.
In the additional "comfort" tournament for the non-participants in the final won the family of Angels from Pirdop.
The association "Bridge Club Velingrad" received excellent reviews about the organization for the fourth consecutive time at the state doubles championship. This was done with the kind assistance of Hotel Velina, whose manager Ilko Iliev joked that if the progression is to be maintained, the next championship should be organized in a stadium.
