BSP wants power with 121 MPs

16.11.2004 09:05 •
BSP Deputy Chairman Rumen Petkov and Roma MP Toma Tomov met with supporters in Velingrad on the evening of 11 November. Together with them came the regional chairman of BSP Kostadin Kobakov and the new coordinator of the Armed Forces for Pazardzhik and Smolyan Boris Tsvetkov.
In front of the audience in the large hall of the municipality Rumen Petkov outlined the three main tasks before the BSP: preparing management projects, shaping the coalition format for the parliamentary elections, determining the personal participants in the parliamentary race and the executive power. The main goal of the BSP is successful management and therefore the party will work for a maximum election result - 121 seats in the National Assembly. Rumen Petkov emphasized that in recent years the Bulgarian people have been lied to repeatedly, but the BSP is not a one-day party and has no right to lie to people. He described as speculation the conclusions that there is serious economic growth in Bulgaria today. An example of criminal privatization was the BTC deal without protection of the social and state interest. The Ministry of Economy is also ruining Bulgartabac Holding by imposing a deal in which we do not keep the winning brands and foreign markets, and more than 6,000 people have been thrown out on the street. The privatization of electricity distribution companies is not at all consistent with the unions, which is why R. Petkov made heavy accusations against the ministers Kovachev and Shuleva, including for escaping parliamentary control. Another reproach to the government was that they had rudely expelled the Bulgarian business from privatization. Regarding the election coalition, Rumen Petkov announced that the New Left will be at its core. The goal of the BSP is a coalition with real political entities that have potential. Socialists have already experienced the two extremes: because of the self-esteem of profitable people to abandon their partners or like the right now to pick up all sorts of labels so as not to say that they are alone. All attempts to imply that the BSP is negotiating with the NDSV were determined by R. Petkov as frivolous and absurd.
To achieve its main task - government of the state, the left will present in detail its management projects to voters. To let people know in advance whether, for example, we will build gas stations in front of kindergartens and then decide whether to trust us, R explained. Petkov. The political outlook must be clear before speculating on who will be prime minister and minister. And the future left-wing government, according to the MP, will have a political-expert composition and a strong presence of the civil quota.
A question about BSP's strategy in healthcare sounded from the hall, to which the guest replied that education and healthcare would be the two priorities for the party. According to him, the strategy of closing small hospitals is incorrect because their budget is only 8% of the total, but with their liquidation many people remain without affordable medical care. The luxury offices and cars of the NHIF are a robbery, and in this demographic crisis conditions must be created for development here. What is the role of the BSP and DS leadership in mass privatization, Ivan Avramov asked, pointing to Crystal as a concrete example. I claim that the slanders, R. replied. Petkov. According to him, DHS is a propaganda cliche and therefore after 4 years. in power Ivan Kostov did not bring to light any incriminating facts. The failure of the BSP government was the banking collapse and the grain crisis and we bore the responsibility, but the mass privatization only started under the BSP, R emphasized. Petkov. Asked whether the BSP would record that it would punish those who destroyed the economy, the MP said that it was not right for a party to make commitments to justice, which is the job of the prosecution and the court.
Roma find their place on the left, in the Coalition for Bulgaria, and the BSP has the most social policy, the saza for the strategy towards Roma MP Toma Tomov. According to him, Roma integration has been successful for decades and there is no need for the American ambassador to teach us. Most important for Roma is education, health and employment. It is also important to work with them, because without this any surprises in elections are possible. Rumen Petkov was also asked about the electoral system and said that it is not normal for Bulgaria to have over 300 parties. The majority vote for mayor in Svilengrad shows that when there is financial intervention and direct pressure on voters, it is not good. The voter should cast their vote for a good manager, not the one who hands out kebabs and socks. This type of election must end, vote buying and brutal aggression must be incriminated, the MP was adamant.
Questions to Rumen Petkov were also provided by Fidel Beev, who requested an assessment of the local coalition in the Municipal Council. Rumen Petkov answered that the definition of "coalition" is not accurate, it is not about a coalition, but about a common view on certain issues and it is very important to make decisions that take into account the interests of the population. The last question was how the BSP would become more attractive for the young to whom R. Petkov promised a management strategy for education, job competitions without a requirement for 5 years of work experience and tax breaks for companies that provide first place of work to young staff.

The situation does not imply a one-party candidacy
- There is an idea for the elections for mayor of Velingrad to achieve a broad coalition with the participation of left, right and centrist parties. Is there a position of the BSP High Council on this issue?
Rumen Petkov: Velingrad needs a strong and responsible mayor, for whom the public interests are above all, who feels, understands and is internally convinced that he should work for the interests of the population. The situation in Velingrad-type municipalities does not always imply a one-party candidacy. It is useful to look for a person who can consolidate public and political support. It is too early to say what type the candidate should be and the political formula. But the opinion of the Supreme Council of BSP is that the Municipal Council of BSP in Velingrad will have all organizational, political and structural support from the High Council. The organization here has experience, has experienced a very difficult campaign, from which there are serious lessons and it will come to the right decision.
- In front of a regional newspaper, Fidel Beev announced that all parliamentary political forces except the NMSS had offered him to be their candidate for mayor. Has the BSP made such an offer to Mr. Beev?
Rumen Petkov: This is not serious!
Kostadin Kobakov: The BSP regional council did not talk to him.
