In recent times, literary meetings at the Open Society Club have been rare. The financial problems also made an imprint on these appearances, which for years established themselves and created their loyal audience. That the desire for such communication has not ceased proved the club's premiere of Dr. Alexander Popov's book "The Land of the Mute".
In the evening of Dimitrovden, many friends of the author and literature gathered, attracted by the name of Peter Juhas - the most famous Hungarian connoisseur of Bulgarian language and literature at the moment, translator of "Life and Suffering Wrongly Sophronia", of "Toyubun", of Radichkov and Dalchev, author of the famous memoir book "Death is Not an Alibi", lecturer in Hungarian language and literature. The publisher of the book Marin Georgiev also came to the premiere in Velikograd, who recalled that the reviewers were Marko Ganchev and Vatyo Rakovski, and in Pazardzhik it was presented by Georgi Mishev - added to Juhas these names speak about the qualities of the work. For 10 years I have been expecting such a book, so correctly and honestly written, a book of memories, which in places are at the level of the best fiction, said Peter Juhas. If he knew nothing about Bulgaria, from this book he would learn a lot about the sad but quite true picture of Bulgarian reality in the time of totalitarianism. With an interesting parallel, Juhas compared Dr. Popov's preface with words from his 1982 interview. and admitted that in the "Land of the Mutes" he had found his thoughts. Peter Juhas also compared the realities in Bulgaria with those in Hungary, pointing out that in our country the spirit of totalitarianism was much more comprehensive: in Hungary moral and ethical norms had been put in their places since the events in 1956. and it was more profitable to be honest, in Bulgaria socialism has deformed the characters as the Chinese shoe deforms the legs. In Hungary since the era of socialism there is no case of a peasant killing a peasant, it was not possible to get someone to change the name of an animal, let alone a person, as happened in our country with the revival process. Under the pen of Dr. Popov died literature and began to speak life itself, there was no event of the past decades that was not reflected in this book, summarized Peter Juhas, who had selected two strong excerpts from the memoirs to make everyone in the hall feel the spirit of these memories. Marin Georgiev also highly appreciated Dr. Popov's new book and promised to publish it in one volume together with the first part "The Unspoken". According to him, many Bulgarian writers after November 10 missed their chance to become great writers by not writing real memoirs, but again trying to serve on a political conjuncture. Bulgarian writers are afraid of the truth, emphasized M. Georgiev and pointed out Dr. Popov as an example to the contrary. The author himself told what prompted him to write exactly this type of literature: in 1992. He found in the District Library 92 books about the past of the Pazardzhik region, and only 7 of them had an objective and strictly scientific character, all the others were highly ideologicalized. Without the real presentation from the contemporary, we would remain for the descendants as one gray mass, so we had to testify before the court of time and history, said Dr. Popov. He recalled that this was made possible thanks to the proclaimed and protected in the new constitution freedom of speech - the greatest achievement of Bulgarian democracy so far. Despotism begins with an assault on freedom of speech and ends with its restoration. This book is one of the possible points of view, it is only a pebble in the colorful mosaic of time - it is the self-evaluation of the author, who is known for his respect for other people's opinion. The audience's appreciation was evident in the excitement with which Ivan Koev's words were filled - "I understood that we did not meet Dr. Popov, but he with us!"; Dr. Borislav Andreev - "Three nights I read and I did not sleep"; Drago Ushev - "Heals the reader's soul"; Dr. Anna Kolchagova - "Book of memories I read with great pleasure" the mayor; Very strong were the words of Dr. Popov in the finale of the evening. He told about the heavy fate of Grandfather Daskal and the family of master-stolar Blago Ushev. I wrote about these people in the Land of the Mutts to give ourselves some courage. They have done so much in years of slavery and nationalization, even more we have to do today to achieve the new Bulgarian Revival, the author said. A piece of courage took with them those who came to the meeting, a piece of courage will also be given to those who open and read "The Land of the Mutts". Elena Baeva
