Taxes: Paradoxical but Fact

11.02.2002 21:05 •
The topic of taxes continues to excite residents of Veligrad, especially days before the session at which the Municipal Council is expected to reduce the garbage fee at the suggestion of the mayor. Here is one of the opinions of a reader of the newspaper, whose name we keep in the editorial office, but at her request we do not announce:
It is good to be given transparency regarding some decisions at the municipal level that concern all of us - the citizens of Velingrad. It is surprising the fact that the garbage fee in the capital is 4 mills, and with us it is 4.5 mills. That we pollute - we pollute. That we are a resort town and this is true, but not at the level of Varna, where the fee is 3 per mille?! If my income is sufficient, I would gladly pay 4.5 per mille, but the high amounts due are equal to 1/2 of my salary and my mother's entire pension, for example.
There are other paradoxes. By law, a dwelling that is not inhabited throughout the year is not taxed with a garbage fee if an application has been made by the owner by the end of the previous year. But in our municipality and this is not the case. Ten days after my mother-in-law's death, we get a fine for dumping garbage in unauthorised places. Two years later, we also receive a report of a garbage fee and a property tax in her name. And the dwelling was transferred to my son, and he paid the dues. Since 2000. the valuation of the dwelling is updated, but the tax is always different. Now the deceased's is 8.80 leva and my son's is 17.00 leva. Isn't it enough for employees not to send letters to a dead person and not to have such differences in numbers? And this case is not unique.
