DPS MP Beev hid behind immunity

05.07.2005 09:19 •
The elected MP from DPS Fidel Beev on June 30 was to appear as a defendant in the criminal case brought against him by the District Prosecutor's Office - Pazardzhik. The Prosecutor's Office accused him that as mayor of the municipality of Velingrad, he had entered into unprofitable fuel deals with his own company, had failed to comply with the public procurement law and had caused material damage to the municipal budget.
From March to June, Mr. Beev three times achieved a postponement of the case: the first time he stated that he had failed to find a lawyer, the second time his lawyer was abroad, and the third time the defendant presented a copy of a hospital sheet. Ahead of the June 30th session, a new move followed: a request to dismiss the case, as Fidel Beev already enjoys parliamentary immunity plus another hospital sheet. The question whether on June 30, before the CEC officially announced the names of the new deputies and they were sworn in, Mr. Beev has immunity is a complex legal case. In any case, everything was done to ensure that this criminal process did not begin. Although if he were sure of the legality of his actions, the more dignified behavior of the former mayor and current MP would be to stand before the court and prove his rightness. On Friday last week, Sofia City Prosecutor Boyko Naydenov announced that it is right to lift the immunity of the four new MPs (one of them is Fidel Beev) against whom cases are being brought. There should be no untouchables, everyone should be equal before the law, the city prosecutor said, but stressed that the request for waiver of immunitys is within the prerogatives of Prosecutor General Nikola Filchev.
