"- I suggest you make a big store in Velingrad.
- I suggest you increase the population of Velingrad to at least 200,000 people".
The dialogue was held between the chairman of the Municipal Council - Velingrad Nejat Kehayov and a businessman from the capital of the Republic of KOMI Syktyvkar. The meeting, held on May 30, in the municipality participated the temporary mayor Atanas Vodev, municipal councilors, businessmen from the field of wood processing, bakery and tourism from Velingrad, former vice-president of COMI Yuri Kolmakov and representatives of the business from Syktyvkar.
The capital of the former Soviet republic has 250,000 inhabitants, it is governed by a local parliament of 25 deputies who elect the mayor of the city and determine his salary of 3,500 euros. Syktyvkar is thriving economically, the smallest store of the aforementioned businessman is located on 24,000 sq.m. And the idea of the meeting in Velingrad was conceived at the council of workers in COMI in the autumn of 2004: to create a joint commercial company between the two republics, whose basis would be the Pazardzhik region. The first step was the signing of a contract with the District Government last year, but because of the large bureaucracy, the next steps are delayed. The business delegation from Sivtivkar also came with specific practical tasks. Alexander Daskalov and Dimitar Kasapski recalled the times when huge quantities of wood from COMI were imported into Bulgaria. We have a blatant need to import wood, we know that a huge state machine has to be set in motion to restore the old contacts, but this would help a lot for the development of woodworking in Velingrad, they said.
As traditionally strong for tourists from the former USSR defined Velingrad the manager of the Palace Hotel Boris Golomehov. He used the meeting to invite tourists from COMI to our city. But it turned out that at the moment the hit in tourism and in COMI are the Turkish resorts, and the people from the delegation rightly stressed that in COMI they need to know about Velingrad in order to come - that is, there is no advertising, we are not present on their market.
Vrid Mayor At. Vodev presented a wealth of our mineral waters, opportunities for balneology, for sport, for cultural exchange. Mr. Kehayov gave the guests the encyclopedic guide "Chepino A-YA", and its editor-in-chief Mikhail Alexiev added his autograph. This meeting ended in the Palace Hotel, and soon some of the businessmen from Syktyvkar will come back to Velingrad.
