A practical seminar "Local development in forest areas" was held on May 19 at the Agency for Regional Development in Velingrad. The event was organized in cooperation with the Institute of Socialogy at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the University of Quebec in Utaue, ARUC and the Faur de Legl Corporation in Quebec, Canada.
The seminar was opened by the temporary mayor of the municipality Atanas Vodev, who welcomed the participants. The Executive Director of ARP-CBI Vaska Milusheva presented two initiatives for local development, which they work on successfully: the herb incubator in Draginovo and the project "Mountain eco-kiss" for the production of sweet from wild fruits.
On behalf of the guests from Canada, Mr. Jacques Boucher explained that in Quebec they have been working on the topic of local development in forest areas since 2002. An interesting 9-year experience was presented by the director of the corporation "Fore de Legl" ("Forest of the Eagle") Mark Baudouin. The territory covers a forest of 140 square kilometers near the capital Ottawa. For years, the forest was used intensively by Native American tribes and forest concessionaires, with the local population having no access to forest wealth. In 1980. The forest becomes public again and the appetites for it are enormous. The government decided to give it to a non-governmental organization involving representatives of Indian tribes, the municipality, a research institute, a snowmobile club, etc. The organization draws up a plan and strategy, subject to the main idea of the forest being in service of the social needs of local communities. The results show that from 1 job today there are over 100, and the turnover of 350 thousand Canadian dollars has reached 3 million. Therefore, in Canada they rely on such type of local government, which, however, in the foreseeable future is unlikely to be applicable in Bulgaria.
