Dimo Tonev was born in 1964. in Velingrad. Between 1971-79. began to actively engage in sports, but not volleyball, which would bring him the greatest successes, but swimming and skiing.

He is lucky to fall to good coaches who created many champions - Anton Mitrov in swimming and Georgi Stambolov in skiing. From Secondary School "Cyril and Methodius" in Velingrad continues in the Sports School "Vasil Levski" in Pazardzhik. After that he did regular military service in CSKA - Sofia, completed higher education at the National Sports Academy.
From 1984 to 1989. competes for Levski Spartak Sofia. Multiple champion of Bulgaria and winner of the Volleyball Cup. From 1989 to 1998. plays for the Italian teams Petrarcha Padua, Sisley Treviso, Volley Prato, Palavolo Catania, Olympiakos and Panathinaikos Greece, Galatasaray Turkey.
With the Bulgarian national volleyball team, he participated in many European and World Championships. At the 1986 World Cup in Paris. The Bulgarian team featuring Dimo Tonev won third place. In 1990. in Rio de Janeiro, ours became fifth, and Dimo Tonev was named the best blocker in the world. Our fellow citizen participated in the Seoul Olympics in 1988, and in the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. wears the Bulgarian tricolor in the lead.
Currently Dimo Tonev is engaged in tourism, owns a hotel and a holiday village "St. George" in Borovets.
As an athlete who has glorified Bulgaria's name in world volleyball, Dimo Tonev has undoubtedly long won the love and respect of all Bulgarians who love this sport, and the title of "Honorary citizen of Velingrad" will be deserved recognition to a great athlete by his fellow citizens.
