Between the two tails - kidnapping and high tension

03.11.2003 17:41 •
Unprecedented was the situation in Velingrad between the two rounds of the elections for mayor of the municipality. On Monday and Tuesday before the run-off, the main political forces were still analyzing the situation after the first round and were not giving clear signals of their future intentions.
Tuesday's news came from the election headquarters of independent candidate Alexander Daskalov, who issued an official invitation to Green Party candidate Fidel Beev for a public dispute on October 30 evening.
On Wednesday, the election situation underwent a sharp change: around the city was rumored that Desislava Beeva - the daughter of the candidate mayor Fidel Beev, was kidnapped in Sofia. Until Friday, no official information had been released on the case, but high tensions were palpable.
In the evening on Wednesday, an expanded plenum of the BSP and the parties from the center-left coalition, which took a joint decision of the second tu, was held to support Alexander Daskalov because of similar management programs. The next day, the new "United for Velingrad" was officially announced, in which the three parties supporting the candidate BSD, NE and SE were joined by the BSP and the centre-left coalition, NMSS, VMRO, SDS. The unification was announced at a meeting on October 30, which did not become a dispute because of Mr. Beev's absence. On Thursday, the positions of the DPS, the UDF and the BZNS-NS, which separately called on their voters to vote their conscience, became clear.
Friday, October 31, was the toughest day of the campaign. At noon, all major metropolitan media spread for the first time the news of the kidnapping of 20-year-old Desislava Beeva. Personally, the Secretary General of the Interior Boyko Borisov announced that they were working on the case. In a series of appearances in newspapers, radios and televisions, Mr. Fidel Beev expressed the enormous pain of the family and announced that he was unable to pay the requested record ransom of 2 million euros. He also shared doubts that police officers and former berets were involved in the kidnapping, as the kidnappers reacted immediately after his phone conversations with the police. For his part, Boyko Borisov reacted by asking Mr. Beev to name names and voiced the doubt "if there is a kidnapping", saying that the specialists are working on different versions. On Friday evening, independent candidate mayor Alexander Daskalov closed his campaign - first with a car procession in the three neighborhoods of Velingrad and Draginovo, and then with a concert on the central square featuring Georgi Gotsev and the dance performance "This is Bulgaria". From the rostrum in support of Mr. Daskalov spoke Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Lydia Shuleva.
Although it was a day of reflection, on Saturday tensions remained high because of the lack of favorable development around the abduction and the dozens of versions, doubts and assumptions.
