DECLARATIONS Since March 27, it has become possible to file the annual tax returns in Velingrad instead of Pazardzhik. The Pazardzhik District Court reduced by 2 years the sentence of Oleg Chikov, who beat Rakitova artist Dora Balinova to death a year ago. The sentence becomes 10 years in prison and 50,000 lev compensation. The decision of the district judges was once already returned because of procedural omissions by the Court of Appeal - Plovdiv, now it can be appealed again.

SEMINAR The directors of children's and educational institutions from the municipality of Velingrad left on Friday for a seminar in Bansko. The seminar will be with the participation of the Minister of Education Daniel Valchev and is dedicated to the most current problems of the sector. It involves educators from Smolyan, Plovdiv, Blagoevgrad and Pazardjik regions.

DEPUTY Coalition for Bulgaria MP Kostadin Kobakov visited Velingrad on 29 March. Mr. Kobakov met with voters and journalists.

AWARD15-year-old Elena Golomeeva from Sts. Cyril and Methodius received an incentive award from a national drawing competition on the theme of Liberation. The competition, organized by the Municipality of Pleven and the Military History Museum in the city, involved more than 1500 students from 96 settlements in Bulgaria. Their works are arranged in an exhibition in the panorama "Pleven Epopee". A letter of thanks was received at the school for the success of Elena Golomeeva.

ISSO On March 30, a meeting was held at the Information Center for Small and Medium Business in Velingrad to clarify the standards for quality and acquisition of ISSO 9000. The various new grant schemes for 2006 were also clarified.

EXHIBITION On April 3, the exhibition "Christian Inhabitation in the Rhodopes - Churches and Monasteries" was opened at the Historical Museum, a work of the Museum in Smolyan and the Institute for Balkan Studies - Thessaloniki. Expect details in the next issue.
