Are they separating Sarnitsa into an independent municipality?

28.06.2005 08:42 •
At the concert with which the NMSS closed its election campaign on June 22 in Velingrad, candidate-MP Valentin Miltanov announced the intentions to separate Sarnitsa into an independent municipality. For this purpose, the Minister of Regional Development C. Cerovski has submitted an opinion to the Council of Ministers proposing that Sarnitsa be differentiated as a municipality separate from Velingrad.
Sarnitsa together with Medeni Polyani and Pobit Kamak meet the requirements of the law for an independent municipality by number of inhabitants (over 4,500 inhabitants) and distance from the municipal center (over 40 km). The desire of the Srniani was categorically stated in a referendum a few years ago and since then a decision of the state authority has been pending, but for now Srnia has managed to change only its status from village to city. A decision to designate a new municipality has the power to take the Council of Ministers.
It remains to be seen whether, when and which government will vote to separate Sarnica. The issue is definitely complex and its decision would have ambiguous but strategic importance on the management and development of the region. If it is taken soon, it will trigger elections for mayor and Municipal Council not only of the new municipality of Sarnitsa, but also of the municipality of Velingrad.
