Open letter from the Mayor of the Municipality of Velingrad to the media

08.08.2002 13:31 •
In connection with the ongoing battle in the media space in Velingrad, resulting from the emergence of a new cable operator, there is a serious tendency to involve different institutions in a private conflict. The municipality - directly and indirectly and personally my name are involved in public debates and discussions expressing unilaterally different problems. Tendency in the public domain is emphasized on the same topics by deliberately not seeking different positions and opinions, but only those that are negatively rated for the Municipality. It is inexplicable that much of the allegations are not backed up with documents that give the most accurate insight into the issues being discussed. The sole purpose of this approach is to manipulate public opinion and create false notions about the work of the municipal leadership.

The municipality has the same attitude towards all media and in our previous work we have always shown it. We work openly and transparently and are open to criticism by the media, through them and by the citizens, as long as it is constructive and does not serve certain interests, but is beneficial for the development of our city and effectively solve the problems of its inhabitants. Proof of this is the new page of the Municipality on the Internet, in which there are two forums open - for opinions on the project "Sutka" and "Hot Questions to the Mayor". The address is city.velingrad.com.
The municipal leadership is adamant that it will not allow itself to be involved in media battles and become the scapegoat of misunderstood competition. And I want to remind you that the Municipality is not the institution that issues cable operator licenses. In my opinion, the only judge of the media and their real place in society are the citizens.
We live in a democratic society, and each of us is free to choose and make our own judgments. And each media wins its audience primarily with a quality product, with guaranteeing the right to objective information and to freely express the opinion of different positions, ideas and beliefs in society.
Today, the trend across the country, in small and large cities is an increasingly saturated media space. Velingrad is no exception - and existing media should accept collegially with dignity the manifestation of new - televisions, newspapers, radios and this should stimulate them, because only in creative competition is good media born and established.
Mayor of Velingrad Municipality: Dr. Tsvetan Dafov
