Organized by Historical Museum - Velingrad with the help of v. "Tempo" round table, dedicated to the new theses and ideas for the Letopis of pop Metodi Draginov, has its backstory.
Some events from Chepinsko's past are of particular importance in our national history. In the New History of Bulgaria, one of them was the publication of the Letopis by Stefan Zahariev in 1870. and making it a motivating factor for a series of events throughout the twentieth century. Very accurately conveys this role prof. Strashimir Dimitrov: "Nothing is able to erase the fact that in our literary history there is a work called "Letographical Note of Pop Metodi Draginov", which had an extremely strong impact on the minds and behavior of Bulgarians in the 19th and 20th centuries, which was the basis of fateful political and cultural-religious decisions."
Quite naturally, the issue of Letopis was part of the problems discussed at the 1996 Historical Museum. conference dedicated to the church of St. Trinity." He was also affected in the books published by our local authors in the first half of the 90s series about the history of Chepinsko. The new studios and articles by Bulgarian and foreign authors that have come out in the last 3 years have once again attracted our attention to the Letopisa. Our fellow citizen Dimitar Dimitrov, after lengthy studies, offered us a new look at this issue through the pages of the newspaper Tempo (No. 9/2002). His article became the occasion and reason for holding a round table in the Historical Museum on April 1 this year. It was attended by s.r.s. Dr. of Historical Sciences Stoyanka Kenderova from National Library "St. St. Cyril and Methodius", Alexander Arnaudov from the Regional Historical Museum of Pazardzhik, Dimitar Dimitrov, Petar Polezhanski, Milen Nalbantov, curators at the museum, curators and teachers of history and Bulgarian language. After the introduction to the problem, Mr. Dimitrov made an extensive presentation of his thesis.
Since in the heated conversations after the round table it became clear that some of the presenters had failed to catch the answers he gave, I will dwell briefly on them. It is necessary first of all to take into account the stated position from which his reasoning begins: Stefan Zahariev has handed over an authentic document and this document - the Letopis of Pop Metodi Draginov, accurately reflects, according to the tradition of the 17th century, the historical events. From this position, first in his article, and at the round table and in his extensive expos, Mr. Dimitrov sought answers to the following questions: When was the Chronicle written? When did the historical events reflected in it take place? What causes them? Through an analysis of the spirit and specificity of the writings, he arrived at the following answers: The historical events reflected in the Chronicle occurred in 1687. Pop Metodi Draginov describes them in Letopisa around 1730. As a reason for the actions of Mehmed Pasha and the Janissaries Mr. Dimitrov pointed out the losses of the Ottoman Empire suffered near the town of Kuron, and only as an occasion - the oath of Metropolitan Gabriel of Plovdiv mentioned in the Letopis. The conclusions thus drawn give reason for Mr. Dimitrov to reject the main thesis of Michael Kiel, whose studio is the reason for the study. Taking into account published documents, Mr. Dimitrov proved that it is possible within this framework to record the historical events reflected by M. Draginov - the violent Islamization of honor by the population in Chepinsko. The themes developed in the second part of the exposition for the Belovo and the Batkun Chronicle, for Chepino's "autonomous church" and for Kamenitsa, according to the author, only confirm his main position from which he addresses the problem:
Another look at the specific moments of this thesis examined in the statement Mr. Arnaudov (his view is presented in a separate article).
A lot of interest was generated by the statement of Mrs. Stoyanka Kenderova. She examined a defter of falconers from Korovo, written in 1556. Through him, the existence of a Bulgarian with a father's name Dragine is being preserved. Because that's one of M's arguments. Kiel - that such a name is not found among the registers of the later 17th century, in her statement Mrs. Kenderova gave a new moment in the research of the Letopis. Excitement and surprise caused and listed in the falconry register names of localities near Draginovo - for more than 400 years some of them remained unchanged according to replicas of some of those present. Mrs. Kenderova's article on this Ottoman document is yet to be published in the collection RODOPICA. A number of opinions were then expressed: from specific remarks by Mr. Polezhanski on Mr. Dimitrov's thesis to the categorical summative opinions of Mrs. Ann. Shopova, Mr. G. Pashov, Mr. Avr. Gerev and Mr. Georgiev. Interesting questions were asked by Mr M. Nalbantov, Mr. Em. Nalbantov and Mr. Ang. Goranov: is there an economic compulsion to drink Islam; is there an original of the Letopis; what are its literary merits; is there evidence for the existence of such a person - Pop Metodi Draginov in the 17th century? Interesting was Emil Nalbantov's story about the traditions in their family and the absence of a memory of such a person.
Informatively, I presented the other thesis developed by Bulgarian scientists on the problem of the Letopis. Ms. Kenderova answered some specific questions related to documents for other countries from the process of Islamization of part of the Bulgarian population. Her shared conclusion that no point should be put to the study of the Chronicle and to the problems associated with it was a good open end to the round table.
