On January 23, a non-attendance competition was held in the municipality for the sale of the municipal plot of 3345 sq.m., which includes the staircase to the "Palace" and the adjacent terrain in the direction of the Summer Cinema. The deputy mayor Angel Toporchev was appointed as chairman of the tender committee, but he was late and the committee had to chair the other deputy mayor, Snezhana Veleva, instead.

From the municipal councilors in the committee participated Ekaterina Kaferinova, Nikola Vetsov, Asim Adem and Dimitar Arshinkov. The only candidate-buyer was "The Palace" Ltd. - owner of the eponymous site with manager Miroljub Stolarski. The initial auction price for the property was 35,800 leva. The firm's offer was approved by the commission, from where they did not disclose what the final amount offered for the deal was. This will be announced after the "non-attendance contest" period provided for in the procedure expires. This is essentially the second sale of the municipal plot of the Palace Ltd. in question. In July last year, the Municipal Council decided to sell 3345 sq.m. of "The Palace" Ltd. There was an objection from the heirs of Georgi Cholakov (Grandfather Daskal), who insisted that the donated to the municipality from their ancestral land to preserve its purpose as a park. The decision of the local parliament was then challenged by the regional governor on the grounds that instead of a direct sale the municipality was obliged to conduct a tender procedure. That slowed down, but it didn't de facto change the sale. Because of the contestation by the regional government, the Velingrad Municipal Council cancelled its old decision and scheduled a non-attendance competition. In the end, this competition was won by the only candidate "The Palace" Ltd. The ambitions of the firm were announced by Mayor Dr. Tsvetan Dafov: to turn the Palace into a four-star hotel to open its doors for a New Year's celebration for the welcoming of 2003. Elena Baeva
