Peter Beron aims for second round

05.11.2001 18:03 •
A small but defensive audience gathered the presidential candidate Dr. Petar Beron in Velingrad. He was represented by the colonel from the reserve Slavcho Velkov - a Velingrad citizen from the national leadership of the Union "Defense", which together with the Union "Bulgaria" raises the pair Dr. Beron and Gen. Stoyan Andreev. Petar Beron is a worthy man with a significant contribution to the development of Bulgaria in the last decade, a patriot who does not crawl before someone else's will, Mr. Velkov said.

The couple's campaign described as offensive, but not aggressive: "We don't chop wood - we want people to have wood and we don't ride horses - we want the Bulgarian people not to be ridden!". Mr. Beron first congratulates the Day of the Enlighteners 1 November. His thesis is that presidential elections are important, and the institution has significant leverage over public and political life. Once in office, the president cannot be dependent on parties or embassies. As the main quality of the Beron tandem - Andreev was pointed out that he was raised by a patriotic organization and patriotism has no color and this increases the chances of support. At the run-off Parvanov will not be supported by Bonev and Georges Ganchev, and if Bonev is second, it will not be supported by Parvanov and DPS - such are the accounts of "Defense", Mr. Velkov revealed. According to them, it was the pair P. Beron and Gen. Andreev is truly independent and can count on massive support in the second round. Dr. Beron's position on Bulgaria's accession to the EU and NATO was of interest. For the European Union, he was adamant that we would decorate it and that is where we belong. For NATO, "it may be necessary to enter." In the current conditions and environment of our country, it is difficult to fight for neutrality, but we must enter NATO with dignity - as partners, not junior brothers. Therefore, we insist on preserving the Bulgarian army and the military-industrial complex, stressed P. Beron. And Mr. Velkov added that we are not allies with NATO now because Bulgaria has no signed treaty and Art. 5 of the organization's statute - "if someone attacks us, NATO will protect us as much as Cyprus protected in the attack on Turkey." Both Beron and Velkov are of the opinion that the current military actions in Afghanistan are not the right method to fight terrorism. The presidential candidate vowed that if he became commander-in-chief, he would never send a single Bulgarian soldier to Afghanistan, Bosnia, Cambodia, etc. These are problems of the great powers, to solve them, we will defend our interests and build a system of national security, and we will not be puppets of strings, ruled from abroad, he cut. Our relations with Russia should be based on historical ties, Slavic and geographical proximity, in no case between principal and satellite, and visas should be quickly dropped. Petar Beron also clarified why he stepped down from the UDF presidency in 1990. The reason is that I did not receive support from the NCS of the UDF against the slander and falsehood made by the person Zhelyo Zhelev. Back then, all the leaders in the NCS were making political calculations for the presidency, Beron believes. He recalled that the Committee on Files both for the parliamentary and presidential elections had checked him and had not found a single line against him. Elena Baeva
