In the village of Bachkovo on 4 decares area the Stoyanovi family created the first biodynamic farm in Bulgaria, producing ecologically clean produce according to European eco-standards. As a model, organic farming is borrowed from nature itself, and as a philosophy and practice it strives to be in harmony with the surrounding world without damaging it. The main thing for the biodynamic farm is the use of biological methods in agricultural practice, and all activity is consistent with unified international, national and regional standards. (The EU has adopted over 300 environmental documents). The quality of the farm's production is guaranteed through a system of control, certification and accreditation. The use of artificial fertilizer is completely excluded, and natural soil fertility is maintained through legumes, perennial crop rotations, manure recovery, compost, green fertilization. Synthetic pesticides and growth regulators in plant protection are also completely excluded, using sustainable varieties, biological and agrotechnical methods, vegetable and mineral oils, natural regulators, herbal and vegetable potions.
Before any certifications are obtained, at least a 12-month mandatory transition period is passed, during which the principles of organic farming are applied. The biodynamic farm uses the knowledge and practice to achieve the harmony between the earth and the sky, the zodiacal constellations, the sun, moon, planets and plants in the garden through simple everyday actions at a specific time. The annual lunar calendar of the gardener is used, exactly the time of planting in the ground of each plant is observed according to the position of the Moon in front of the belt of zodiac constellations, as well as knowledge of the phases and path of the Moon in the zodiacal belt. The positives of biodynamic farming are: increasing biodiversity, protecting groundwater from nitrates, improving soil structure and fertility, reduced about 50% energy costs, reduced soil erosion several times, higher quality of production and last but not least the use of natural local and recoverable natural resources.
The biodynamic farm in Bachkovo grows 15 types of vegetables, 10 types of herbs and spices, 5 types of berry, 5 types of mavrud grapes, 5 types of peaches and apples and more pears, plums, almonds, dogwood, medlar, hazelnut, chokeberry, pomegranate, ginger. In the words of Dimitar Stoyanov, who is also vice chairman of the eco club in Bachkovo: "The farm feeds 3 families and has production for sale within 25%-30%. Moreover, not only the grandchildren, but also the children of the village learn and work instead of wondering what to do during the summer vacation."
