In the vicinity of Velingrad there will be a unique tourist attraction

At the Greenwich Observatory in England, the place where the most famous meridian of the globe passes is marked by a metal lead line. It separates the Western and Eastern Hemispheres and, along with its scientific significance, has a huge pull for tourists from all over the world. In the vicinity of Velingrad there is a similar interesting place - an intersection of 24 meridian and 42 parallel. It is located east of Kleptuza and according to the famous our landman Prof. Georgi Puhalev in our country there is no other point of this rank, this is the most important intersection in Bulgaria with scientific and cultural-historical significance. That is why for years there has been the idea that the place where the meridian and the parallel intersect should be marked in a special way and become one of the tourist attractions of our region. Now this idea has taken on concrete dimensions: with the joint efforts of the two tourist companies "Yundola" and "Ostrets", a project was won at the Municipal Information Center for Business and at the University of Forestry-Sofia. Out of 230 applicants, the Ecocommunity Foundation approved 18, among which is ours. The foundation will provide funds with the help of the German Marshall-USA Fund, the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation and...
The project was officially presented on July 8 at a meeting in ICICB, which was attended by Prof. Puhalev, Deputy Mayor M. Karamolla, representatives of both tourist companies and citizens. The manager of ICMSB Daniela Peneva explained that the first stage of the project will not mark the point, but within 7 months will be carried out the preliminary activities of preparation of a geodetic basis, subtraction of the tax indicators for obtaining a complete biogeographical picture and landscape design. After that, a route will have to be chosen by which velingradians and guests of the city will get to the point. Mrs. Peneva thanked Snezhana Veleva and Nikola Todev, who were the first to locate the point. Nikola Todev told how together with his son Vasil on March 4, 2003. with the help of a special apparatus they found the point. The mountain trail next to it will be marked, but the problem is which is the best, not the shortest route, how to include other local attractions and avoid the ugly views around the Anezitsa neighborhood. Tourists gave the idea to mark a path from Lake Kleptuza through the chapel of St. Elijah and from there to the point of intersection. The starting point can also be hotel "Velina", the Colophon Plant, Markovi rocks, it can also be reached through the Micro dam. In addition, it will have to be agreed with the owner of the territory VAT "Alabac".
Prof. Puhalev with real enthusiasm gave many ideas how to turn this intersection into a tourist attraction. According to him, the imaginary line of the 24th Merdian is particularly important because it connects the northernmost (Shepidbergen) and the southernmost (Crete) part of Europe. It can be marked in some way: with a belt of two rows of trees, with lighting or in another original way. In the center of Velingrad could be made a presentation of the intersection in a small scale and with a common effort to think about more original solutions.
Velingrad is lucky right here only on the territory of Bulgaria to cross meridian and parallel. It really depends on all of us how best for the resort to take advantage of the unique intersection. The start is given, all interesting ideas are welcome.
