Velingrad hosts a Orienteering competition

03.07.2002 18:09 •
For two days (June 29 and 30), Velingrad hosted orienteering competitions for the Velingrad Cup, the Strahil Palanov Prize. A total of 230 orienteers from 29 clubs from all over the country took part in the competition. Conditionally, the orienteering was divided into two stages during the two different days, as during the first (Saturday) the contestants competed in the area of Velyova Banya Park, and during the second (Sunday) in the area of the 4th kilometer. Orienteering was divided into 18 age groups, with the most interest being followed in the youth group or the so-called Elite class. In it in men's champion became Nikolay Dimitrov from CSKA (Sofia) and in women Eleonora Nikolova from Club "Variant 5" (Targovishte). The Velingrad Orienteering Club also took part with its competitors, but they failed to take a ranking. In addition to the competition for the Velingrad Cup, the competitions were also decisive for the formation of the youth national orienteering team, which this month will take part in the World Youth Championship in Spain. The competition was organized by the Bulgarian Orienteering Federation, as well as by former competitors in this sport, among them was the Velingrad man and long-time competitor Georgi Kartalov. Serious financial support was also given by representatives of the local carpentry business. Nikolay Stoynov
